Artist Statement

According to Tuhoe, our physical human whakapapa begins with the Mist Maiden and her lover, our great ancestral mountain, tucked away in the Urewera forest, Maunga Pohatu. She is draped in moss, as a symbol of her delicate feminine water which affords life on stone, which in turn allows other forms of life to grow, she is indeed the goddess ancestress of Tuhoe, the Children of the Mist.
