Te Pou Pū Tokotoko Whatumanawa – The Emotional Heart

This Ancestor is attributed with bringing the craft of wood carving to the world of light. After his son Manuruhi or Te Haumanu Turuki (seen above Rua as the tekoteko of Tangaroa’s Whare) was taken by Tangaroa (the Ocean) for not following tikanga and offering back his first catch of fish. Tangaroa placed him as a tekoteko on the top of his Whare(house). Once Rua found out he went to save his son from Tangaroa’s abode, and while he was there the carving on the outside of his house spoke to him and revealed how to save his son. It was here that Rua was exposed to the art of whakairo(carving) and brought back the art form to humanity. Rua also witnessed that the carvings in the house of Tangaroa had the power to speak. Ngā Kura Huna ā Ruatepupuke [The Hidden Worlds of Ruatepupuke]. Spiritual Totem: Tohorā, (Whales). Te Kauae Tapu o Tānga-roa, The Sacred jawbone of Tangaroa. Weapon: Taoroa paraoa
