Artist Statement

Ruaumoko – the archetype of earthquakes and volcanic activity, and the youngest child of Ranginui & Papatuanuku. His restlessness while in Papatuanuku;s womb caused the deep uneven grooves and ridges on her surface terrain, scarring the earth and creating the first sacred forms of Moko/Tattoo.  This piece was commissioned for the Ruaumoko Exhibition at the Matakiore Tattoo Studio & Gallery in 2012 in commemoration of the Christchurch Earthquakes. It references to the local volcanic landscape and history in Aotearoa.
