Toi Te Huatahi as he was known in his home islands of the Marquesas, was known as Toi Kai Rakau in Aotearoa. Toi was a high chief and a stone mason where he left many stone works throughout the islands including part of the stone road that circumnavigates Rarotonga. In Aotearoa he lived in Whakatane at Kaputerangi above the present township. From him many of the people of Aotearoa descend, including many of the captains of our famous double hulled canoes.
